Router problems

My friend has a very weird router problem where we try to connect to his gateway ip and it can not even make a connection (we tried IE and FF) i told him to reset his router, release his ip and renew it (explaining ofcourse). He is yet to do this but can anyone think of anything else to try or if you have encountered this problem can you reply please. As specs are not particulary needed (and i can't remember them) i will not post them except he has a Netgear router and were not %100 sure of model. Thanks in advance.

is it a combined modem/router?because if he has reset it he will have to reconfigure it with his user name, password and settings for his provider
