Hi there I am in agony with my shoulder tonight and I was out in town handing out leaflets in bitter cold weather now my shoulder is in agony and I was wondering if cold really affects the joints or is it an old wives tale

Yes the cold can make your shoulder ache. Try a hot water bottle on it this evening to relax the muscle.

thank you Maydup. I appreciate that :)
When we feel cold we tense up and tight muscles ache more - as said a hot water bottle and some Ibugel will help.
I don't think that cold weather can make an otherwise healthy joint painful, but if you already have a problem with the joint then the muscles tightening with the cold can make the problem worse.
I don`t think the cold causes sore joints and I don`t think damp weather causes sore joints but if you suffer from 'joint problems' then cold, damp weather can exacerbate the problem.
Actually, although cold weather in itself, can cause thickening of fluids in the various 'joints' it's the increased barometric pressure accompanying weather chagnes that cause the discomfort, especially in Rheumatoid Arthiritis (RA) suferers accoding to a 2007 in-depth study here in the U.S. at Tufts University.

Tests on cadavers found that the amount of atmosphere weight increase (indicated by a barometer) cause hip joints to move out of alignment by as much as 1/3 from normal...

Bednobs........LOL.....priceless...

I agree with the post of Clanad
when I was a kid I broke my arm, on the way to have the plaster off I tripped up the hospital steps and broke it again. After that my arm would really ache a couple of hours before any rain started, Family used to use me
s a weather forecast after that, if the arm did not ache off we would go.
My Good Lady (Carakeel) has a lot of joint problems due to bone cancer some years back, she now gets a lot of problems and pain in the cold weather.
