From what I can gather from the net it appears a lot of people believe John Wayne may have said it, but can't find what film it came from.

One other suggestion is that it was said by someone like Jim Davidson on the Generation Game.

It was John Wayne, and if memory serves me right it was in a film called True Grit where he heards cattle with a load of youngsters, and he says it to one of them.............
Oops, me thinks they 'herd' cattle!!! Damn, these big fingers and thumbs..........
Sorry, to clog this question up, but on second thought the film was 'The Cowboys'..........
