Why do we tip waiters/waitresses, taxi drivers and hairstylists? After they're only doing their job! Why tip the waiter when it's the poor old chef stuck in a hot kitchen, slaving away who's done all thhe hard work?

I agree, dont like the system of tipping at all, quite often there are people busy peddalling away in the background doing loads of work that are just forgotten.
And why is it just some services that we are expected to tip?
On a £850-00 job the customer gave me a huge tip of £2-00. As he handed it over he said have a pint on me:-)
Restaurants generally operate a tronc scheme to share tips amongst all staff.

It's just i came out of the hairdressers, after having a trim, wash and blowdry, and the cost was £16, I gave her £20 note and told her to keep the change. Then I went into the bank because the building society hadn't trransferred cash and had made a right ballzzup of our standing orders, paying some twice, other's not at all, the lady said it had taken her all morning to sort out --- if anybody deserved a tip it was her!
Back in the '60's I had a part time job serving petrol, no self service in those days, the people I worked for had two stations one on a main road which was very busy the other in the town which was fairly quiet. They employed two part timers and six full timers and all tips went into a tin and were shared out monthly with everybody part or full timers getting and equal share. In the four years I worked there I can't remember a case of anybody fiddling the tip tin.
where I once worked, all tips and presents of boxes of chocs, biscuits etc were given to the main reception and were shared equally every month between the staff, including cleaners, kitchen staff and chefs. No squabbles then which I thought was really fair
Often waitresses earn a lot less per hour than the chef, so they deserve the tips.

In saying that, someone I know who is a waitress earns enough in tips to save her wages every month!!

English friends who live in California have an 18 year old daughter who works in a sports bar and restaurant, she has to wear 'cheer-leader' clothes and rollerboots, reckons she earns $100 a night in tips alone. But then That's the way of American culture I suppose, people know they are expected to tip.
