I have a friend (English) who has retired to Germany. She tells of a particularly mystifying German "tradition": at Christmas each year, virtually every family in Germany gathers around the TV to watch a British film entitled "Dinner for One", and - year after year - they spend the duration of the film rolling about in helpless laughter! I'll leave readers to research the content of the film and make up their own minds about what it tells them of the German sense of humour!
I have seen "Dinner For One". It is a story about an elderly lady who has a dinner party every year on her birthday, and invites all her friends (the same friends each year). The film is set on her ninetieth birthday, when all or her friends are log-since dead, and the only person left alive is her butler James. The running joke of the film is that James has to impersonate each of the other diinner guests, and drink their share of the wine, as well as serving the food to the lady. He gets gradually more and more drunk each course.
