Waited 18months on a local dentist waiting list,at last gained an appointment NHS -need new top dentures-couldnt afford them privately,My dentist (one of a few there)is only young about 22 with an assistant young girl-my first appointment he said would have to take an impression which is uncomfortable but usual-they put a load of soft gooey stuff on a plastic plate thing and put it in your mouth holding it still for about 5 minutes you have to try and breathe through your nose-he said it didnt take so got new gooey stuff and did it all again!and again!till i was gagging and feeling sick. The following 2 weeks went back thinking the worst was over but no!he took anothe impession then another 4 more in all!!and still says he cant get the one he wants-not having been to a dentist for ages-does anyone know if this is normal is he just being careful ,surely it shouldnt take 12 impressions-have got another appointment in 3 weeks he said he would try again!!

I went to my dentist today as I'm having new dentures after 15 years.
She took a top and bottom impression and then said to make a further appointment for the next impression.
Due to reading about Paddy's problem I asked her what the second impression was for. She said that these days, they take an impression with a general mouth piece which is large enough to fit anyone and then send the 1st impression to the dental mechanic who then makes a special mouth piece to fit my mouth and gums for the second impression.
Apparently, they get a better fitting denture this way by having a special mouth piece to suit my mouth.
The dentist ( a young female) was very good today so fingers crossed for next week.
I'd certainly kick Paddy's dentist into touch if he can't do it properly by now.
