I have decided to say nothing to my bank about the £100 error, this is because in the past 11 years they have charged me £30 twice for going into the red for a paltry £12.

Why should he, he is not responsible to oversee their accounting procedures. I know scores of people who never check, solely relying on the bank to get things right. I am disgusted by the suggestion that trt is being dishonest, he is the victim here of the banks ineptitude.

Don't follow how there's 'no mechanism' for retrieving money wrongly credited. If the owner of the account can be identified and put on notice that they have been wrongly credited with a sum intended for someone else's account, they can surely be sued for conversion if they fail to allow its being debited or fail to account for the sum, can they not? They are wrongfully holding 'money' for another's use.
