Wedding flowers and buttonholes

I recently attended a wedding at which the brides family all arived with their buttonhole flowers downward (ie stem uppermost, flower head pointing down) and the grooms family all arrive with their flowers facing upward. What is the correct convention for wedding buttonhole flowers? Flower up or flower down? or does it not matter?

I've never heard of a flower down one before!

I have searched and searched and can find no reference to wearing them that way, I can only find them with the flower pointing upwards.

I have attended family wedding's and the men wore them upwards and the woman wore them facing down. My Auntie who is up on all the ettiquette said that this is the correct way of wearing them. I don't think it really matters I guess some still see it as tradition from years ago like my Auntie (The way they've always done it).
Other wedding's I have been to no-one seemed to have a clue what I was going on about so I had mine facing upwards so I wasnt the odd one out lol

So these days mostly there would be no difference...especially when the children are pageboys and flowergirls...if it is to do with the woman being a virgin....
