Just after having some weetabix with a little milk - knew something was funny - but ate it anyway - thought it was a bad taste in my mouth - however it was the milk - can't believe it bought it on Wednesday night and right enough had a sniff of it - completely off - looked at the date 17 March - I am finding my milk always going off - I think the milk has never never been the same since putting them into these plastic containers which have to have to chemicals in them to make them - no wonder there are so much sickness - between clingfilm and clingfilm dinner and microwaves - I believe it adds so much to sickness. The bottles of milk were the best - I know I have talked about this before but this afternoon has put me really off. The fridge is fine because nothing else ever goes off. What do you think.

mazie - our milkman doesn't come round hardly ever now - as I think neighbours rightly so think supermarket are cheaper - anyway when I checked their wagon they were all cartons.

fried green - never in a million years would I get that time - in fact I would maybe get 2- 3 days - even with the correct date.

I buy my milk in Tesco and can't remember the last time I threw any for being off, it's usually still okay 3 or 4 days after sell by and that's with the dates being very generous (8-9 days) from the day I buy them.

Presumably you don't take too long from shop to fridge? The mikman thing is a bit hit and miss. We get milk delivered to support a local dairy but he comes at midnight so in the summer it's been outside about 8 hours at the weekend - comes in tetrapaks too.

If you buy your milk in the same place then I would certainly take it up with them.

If you are sure it isn't your fridge then their storage needs to be considered.

Do you buy full fat, semi or skimmed milk?

My mum buys her milk from Sainsburys. She`s never had a problem. Supermarkets are pretty strict about making sure their chillers are cold (at least Sainsburys are). The only way to test if your fridge is cold is to buy a fridge thermometer (should read 5 deg C).

Semi, tends to be longer dated than full fat. In common with others I find my semi goes beyond the date, never under.

I think perhaps taking up with where you buy your milk, assuming you tend to use the same shop.

Another thought, do you have a sensitive nose/tastebuds?

eccles - very sensitive nose and taste buds - but believe me when I poured the milk it came out in lumps - there ya go

Well if it was that far gone, and you had used the milk the day before I really do think you need to get yourself a fridge thermometer, it is very odd that your milk can turn that quickly in 24hrs.

Once you have verified your fridge temperature go back to where you shop. You haven't said if you buy you milk from the same shop.

A fridge thermometer is easily picked up in a cook shop or department stores cookware department.

Place it centrally in your fridge, the temperature should 4-5C.

If you have any kind of thermometer in the house that measures down to that temp. You could fill a glass of water put it in the fridge and dunk the thermometer in to take a reading.

I don't know where you get your milk. I got an odd pint from a local corner shop. It didn't keep well. Then one morning I saw the crate on his doorstep in the sun. He didn't bother taking it in until later. So before it went in his fridge it was already not at its best.

I buy UHT skimmed milk from Sainsburys and it lasts ages (despite drinking gallons of tea every day!) If I were you I would definitely take it back or write to them. Good luck :)

I've had big issues with Sainsbury's milk from my local store, particularly the skimmed. Stock rotation in that particular store very poor - often newest stuff at front of shelf. No issues with milk from newsagents in village which always has very long sell-by date

A couple of years ago milk had a four day code on it. Why has it now gone up to 14 days. What has caused this difference.
