Where does soil come from?

Don't laugh...we dug a big hole in our garden and a few weeks later it was full of soil again - how does it get there?

Erosion. It fell in to the hole from the sides, through rain, wind, gravity and possibly small animals.

Hmm, thanks CT - seems logical but why isn't it noticable that the soil has gone from the sides - I think that Fairies may well have something to do with it!

Maybe your neighbur was creeping in at night and dumping the soil from the holes he was digging!

This is more serious than I first thought - maybe a nocturnal observation post is called for to catch them at it (if you get my drift)...

Ihave noticed I can sweep all my patio and next day still find small stoes on it .

Find your hole on a globe of the world, flip it over to the other side and see if someone there keeps filling in a hole that mysteriously appears in their garden.

You could do that (antipodes) but you'll find that the opposite side from anywhere in British Isles is a few hundred miles off the northeast coast of Australia... check here:

I am pretty sure your neighbour is the culprit. I suggest you sneak over to his garden tonight, dig a hole to the size that you want... and steal that!

How "smelly" is this new soil???? Do your neighbours have dogs that they can't be bothered to walk ??can you see where I'm going with this one :-)

I had a similiar problem

woke up one morning and found a large hole in the garden

i was stumped.

i called the police and they came around straight away

Its all ok now as they are lookin into it
