I bought a set of books and would like to know how old they are. They (obviously) don't have a published or copyright date but they do seem to have a Copyright number eg G139. It also says Odhams Press Limited, Long Acre, London WC2 if that is useful to know.
Thanks

By law, a copy of every book published in this country must be deposited with the British Library. You can search the library's 'integrated catalogue' online. This will provide you with the publication date you require:

the site www.bookbrain.co.uk lists all the details of books when you put in the ISBN. However, I don't know it lists books that old.

Thanks cookie and buenchico. I got exactly what I was after from buenchicos link. They were published in 1938. Now I would just love someone to come along and tell me that they are worth something!
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'm glad you found the information you wanted.

You might be able to get an idea of the books' value (if any) by taking a look at the UK's principal site for secondhand books, to see if anyone is offering them for sale. (Remember, of course, that just because a dealer puts a high price on a book, it doesn't necessarily mean that anyone will pay that much for it. Remember, as well, that condition is extremely important with secondhand books):
