renault megane 1.6 auto

I have a 1998 megane auto with a bit of a problem,it has no forward gears,i can get reverse but not d,1,2,3. any ideas other than a new box.

I have heard this is common on these but I'm not sure wether it requires the box replacing.

I suppose that the gear selector is actually actuating the gear select mechanism and not just moving without doing anything ?

I ask because most modern autos are designed so that even if the power to the autogear box control system is off completely you should still get at least one ''get you home'' gear when you move the selector. Renault auto gearboxes usually default to 3rd gear if the selector is moved with no power to the gearbox control system.

I suppose you have checked the oil level? Won't work without it.

is there any gearbox fluid in? if its low on fluid or dirty it wont give enough hydraulic pressure to actuate the gears
