Also, Louise May Alcott's Little women series. Lots in the series, including 'little men,', Jo's boys' and 'good wives'. Fictional, but all about the self improvement journey's of early American 'little Women'.
"Little House on the Prairie" series: Heroine of the books is a teenage Girl; "Anne of Green Gables" similar ilk, "The Railway Children" - Phyllis is the main heroine, and takes a massive personal journey. "Sadako on the 1000 paper cranes" True story of a Japenese girl coming to terms with her battle with Cancer. Any Patricia St John books: "Star of Light", "Rainbow Garden" "Treasures of the Snow" "The Tangle wood's secret". Stories written for girls, particulalry, female heroines, (christian themes), about personal journeys and self sacrifce.
Bio: "Florence Nightingale." Might be interesting too. My daughter has read and loved all these books. She is now 11, but has read and re-read this list (and others of course) since age 8. She has currently a reading age of about 15, but they all should be appropriate for 9-11 year old average reader. Happy reading!
