Even today (It's a national holiday in observance of Martin Luther King's birthday) in certain parts of the country racisim certainly exists. I suppose it always will, given human nature. But, compared to when I was a child riding a passenger railroad in the south it's as different as night and day. Then, every large or small train station would have signs up directing people to "Colored Only" restrooms and drinking fountains. I found that quite strange, because at each stop Negros (as they were called then) made a trip through each passenger car selling box lunches. These would be in a shoebox size container and contain really good food for perhaps 50 cents (half a dollar). The food was obviously prepared in their homes... so... well you get the picture. But, we have come a long way... still a ways to go...

Take away British, Irish, Italian, Spanish, Portugese, Eastern Euro Jews, Africans, Asians and the "Native American (Red Indian)" you don't really have a country.

There's only one race and that's the human race.

you lefties and your simplistic views are so funny !!! but also so sad.

Hahahaha

oooo please tell me someone is calling Ward-Minter a lefty ... thats so funny ....

Would you care to offer a different view Baz rather than just laughing at others who have bothered to share theirs?

Ward makes a good point. To see people defined by their country of origin is as petty as seeing them defined by the colour of their skin. Which is not only small-minded, it's clearly nonsense. And before you rattle out a quick 'humorous' response, just sit back and think about it quietly for a minute or two and examine your own prejudices. Like many other attributes, colour and country of origin are accidents of birth and mean very little. The people who see these things as important are the same ones who would be first in the queue to join the SS, if this were the late 1930's.

Sorry to be so 'simplistic', but it's not really a complex issue; we're all human, and we share a planet - if we choose to make problems based on silly perceived differences, we deserve all we get.

I agree with Clanad. Racism still exists in the States, but things are getting better. I will occasionally come across a person who openly expresses his/her racist beliefs, and usually this person is older (>60). I worked with a guy in southern New Mexico who always talked about "those lazy Mexicans". Whether or not these peoples' children share their parents' beliefs, I don't know.

I'm just stunned I agree with Ward-Minter about something!
Good point Ward! It is good that you finally see some sense to appreciate all other nationalities that make up the population of a country. Never the less, blacks to a greater extent have always been the target of racial hatred in America and they still are. The focus of racism has shifted in the history of ameria where now moslems irrespective of their country of origin are subjected to verbal abuse and labelled as evil.
The land developer Bigg Homes, creator of the Eagle Mountain community near Salt Lake City, touted in its online promotional materials the fact that the development's "black race population percentage (is) significantly below state average." After hearing complaints, Bigg co-owner David Adams removed the phrase in November, blaming the agency that designed Bigg's materials. (Whoever wrote the phrase must have thought that Utah's "state average" of 1.3 blacks per 100 was somehow suffocating.) [Salt Lake Tribune, 12-2-05]
and right wing views are incredibly complex are they?

I don't come across a huge amount of americans. a random couple i met in poland shocked me into silence with their casual racism " Oh I never understand what the blacks are saying, I don't even bother to talk to them" etc.
what? bloody hell. neither countrry has a fantastic record

and if you take out scandinvians, the french, germanic tribes etc, there's very few british people left either. go back far enough in any country's history and
you can make that argument
