ramipril and amlodipine
16 Answers
been on ramipril 5mg for couple yrs recently increased to 20mg a day as bp was still a bit high as i get really nervous when going doctors i asked for a 24hr monitor to prove to them that my bp is not as high as they think it is its due to me being in the doctors office well after two attempts with the monitor which just played up all time no readings where coming up and monitor was goin off at irregular intervals it was decided the monitors where faulty so locum doctor just gave me a prescription for amlodipine 5mg to take with my ramipril but he said cut ramipril down to 10mg he said you shouldnt be taking 20mg now who the hell do i listen to ? whole idea of monitor was so maybe my ramipril would of been cut down when it was shown that my bp is not too bad when not at doctors, have googled amlodipine seems to have quite few side effects where a the ramipril was no problem ,

I'm certainly not a zombie tez, I have been on combined dose of Ramipril and Amlodipine for 3 years now and they suit me well and my blood pressure is spot on at each 6 monthly check. If you read the side effects on each medication you could be scared to death, they list every possible illness/side effect going ......... just in case! What side effects are you meaning from Amlodipine?
ann 86 i asked the same question on google came across some answers from others who were apparently taking it all saying it left them feeling like a zombie no energy couldnt sleep weight gain swollen ankles hot flushes all said stay well clear scared me to death my sister recently was prescribed this drug within 2 weeks of taking it she couldnt walk due to swollen ankles excess fluid retention headaches etc just dont like what im reading about it , but my thing is i wanted to have the 24hr monitor to prove my pressure was not as high in every day life as it was in doctors surgery but because monitors were not working properly i was just given more tablets to take when i wanted to actually cut down my dose of ramipril hopefully
I do get swollen ankles tez but only on long journeys, they soon go down and back to normal again. I did wonder if it was the Amlodipine. I can live with those few side effects though as its keeping my BP perfect. Why don't you try them for a week or two, your doctor can monitor the situation and you and your GP can then decide what is best for you.
tez - another way to keep a check, is to buy yourself a blood pressure monitor to use at home. They are not that expensive and you can list all your readings in a book and take them along at your appointments. White coat syndrome is very common. I had this many years ago and was put on BP tablets, which brought it down so low, I kept feeling faint.
I check mine on my monitor and its fine.

I get a very definite 'white coat' syndrome when I visit either the diabetic clinic or the renal clinic at the hospital and bought myself a blood pressure meter and photograph my reading every day, and show that to the doctors. I've been on Ramipril 10mg and Indapamide 2.5mg for some time now and it suits me very well.
