when a neighbour,s bonfirm covers you home with burning debris and soot even my car needed a wash- what are my rights?

However, if this a continual thing, there is a nuisence law which can be applied. I presume your local bobby (if you have one) can advise you. I'm pretty certain no action would be taken if it was just one-off.
Meanwhile, take photographs of any smoke, soot or other damage and and keep a written log. You could also try talking to your neighbour and tell them of your concerns.
We have someone up the road who does the same....usually just as we've put the washing out and getting ready to have dinner in the garden on a nice summers evening !!!

Yes get in touch with the Council, the whole thing about bonfires is difficult, my council actually has a leaflet all about it so yours might too. The leaflet advises people that it is not the way to do things and gives them alternatives and reasons why it is not a good thing, so maybe they could be sent the leaflet. The best thing to do is to contact them while the bonfire is actually happening, and as already advised if you take photos that is a good idea. They will write to them in the end, however bear in mind that this could cause bad feeling between you and your neighbour and that might be worse than the soot in the long run !
