This sort of info is available on the museum web site.

Always better to look there first.

There are free shuttle buses. If you get the number 3 purple bus from outside the main station entrance it will take you down Liverpool Road right by the museum. They go very frequently though tend to get really crammed round rush hour.

I'm a local so just ask if you have any more questions.
While I think, there are a similater type machine in the large hanger which has all the aircraft in (some lovely old ones like biplanes too!) so take some change if it's the kind of thing they may enjoy.

There are also sometimes special exhibits for which an extra charge is made (though the main museum is free). There is also a little old steam train engine (not a big proper steam train) and you can pay to go for a little ride, not far, just up a track and back really.

Thanks Eve, great answer, the number 3 purple bus it is, and thanks for the tips, we are all looking forward to going next Tues.
You're welcome. They are really useful, the hopper buses as I call them. Have a great time, it's very varied, lots of reading in bits, lots to see in others - it's a much larger site than it looks too.
Argh, sorry, the purple bus goes down Peter Street then Quay Street where you can get off and walk up to the museum up Upper Byrom Street (few mins max).

It's the green bus which goes down Liverpool Road but that doesn't go via Piccadilly Station.

My apologies, having a moment!
Your question made me chuckle, you must be thinking of the other Piccadilly when you mention underground - Manchester doesn't have such a system!
