Mm Links Results April 2013 Week 1

This was a new month and a new setter. Did you forgot that and think it was just an ordinary player setting the links? Oh no. April's links are being set by a Strix, 'Strix the Dilettante' to be precise.

This game was one for the record books, but before I reveal why, here are the owl's chosen links:

Before I reveal the details, I think I should remind you of the main rules of the MM game. Some of you are forgetting.

1) All your guesses must be from 4 to 8 letters in length - anything else is a wasted guess ('collecting' comes in at 10 letters).
2) Your suggested link-word must be a real word that would be recognised as such by the players ('demic' is marked as rare in my Chambers Dictionary - 'pan' + 'ache' or 'pan' + 'ties' would have been acceptable).
3) When combined with the challenge word, your link-word should make either a new word or a well-known phrase - the result will never be a person's name.

The early rush from the shrubbery didn't work for them this week with only one link being picked up when Aquagility opted for DEAD PAN and collected 2 points.

Nearly half an hour later, Tonyav was so desperate for points that he turned up with his BEGGING BOWL and earned 2 points for the effort.

Two hours later, BRANDISHing her drumsticks, along came kettledrum for her 2 points.

The final link had to wait until 4:47pm on SUNDAY!
Twix, always a late player and last to play this weekend, is usually accustomed to collecting the occasional single point, but this week he not only collects 2 points for BREAST PLATE but also the honour of 'Hotshot' for such successful brinksmanship.

Though, to be honest, middlestump and owllady came close with 'armour plate' - but not quite the same thing.

I'm kicking myself as I thought of 'brandish' a few seconds after I'd posted and thought it sounded suitably Strixish, but decided not to ask to change it. Should have known better.
Never mind - will look forward to trying again next week. Well done to Kettledrum and the other scorers.

I said that it would be a miracle to get points this week after last week!
We are now waiting for our flight home, sitting in Virgin's lounge with a glass of the bubbly by my side - sounds like the shrubbery on Friday night!!
