I was going to post this in Technology but it could be hours before someone finds it there.

I am trying to 'create' a cover picture for a FaceBook Page and it has to be 851 pixels wide and 315 pixels tall....

What is that in inches?

Why are you doing it in Word? would be my first question. You would be better off using an image editor like PAINT.NET or similar free application.

It is going to have a lot of words in it and Word is idiot-proof/idiot-friendly.
Ah, ok. In that case it will be 11.35 inches wide by 4.2 inches high according to this website:

I don't think you can convert to inches like that. If you use large pixels, say one inch by one inch pixels, that'd be 851 inches by 315 inches. If you use small pixels it could be vanishingly small. My advice is to try a picture, use it, if it's not right, resize it. There should be painting type apps out there that allows you so size a picture to so many pixels by so many pixels for saving, anyway.
"It is going to have a lot of words in it and Word is idiot-proof/idiot-friendly."

It's not what you should be Using. Download Paint.net and use their text tool. the tool accesses the same fonts as you find on word.

If you need any help I'm happy to answer any questions.
Actually, scrap that ^^^ that is size on monitor not what you were asking. Sorry. lol
Er yes... MS Word for pictures ? Go download a decent painting type app. They allow you to add text and even orient it and position it wherever you like. "Horses for courses", and all that.
wolf: Do it in Word. Screen grab it. Email it to me and I'll resize it for you in Photoshop.

Thanks all - I think that Snags must be my long lost brother as he understands the depth of my lack of knowledge.

I usually create in word and then use gimp to change it to a jpeg.

I just wanted to know how big to make it. :-)
It's size in inches depends on how big the screen is. Obviously a desk-top 42" monitor will show it larger than a mini-iPad or an iPhone for example.
If you use GIMP you have everything you need.
You can scale the image (Image / Scale Image) or crop the image (Image / Canvas Size) to any specified pixel size.

Gimp also has a text tool.
Just tried it with the MS Works Word Processor and I reckon your box would have an inch to spare on either side of a piece of a4 paper (Portrait)
