Cattery?

We've always had someone look after our cat Ella when we are away on our hols but this year its different we will have to put her in a boarding Cattery, she's a nervous thing & I'm a bit worried she'll not settle.

The Cattery has a good name "ShaLynn" in Southend,
has anyone used this Cattery? or any other one? How was your cat afterwards?

When I lived in Greys i had a brill cat sitter that would come round - I used that instead of a cattery, have you considered that?

FGT thanks, Yes I had considered it but H won't hear of it, hense the cattery idea.

Hiya Jemisa.. we have two..''babies''... and no -one to look after them when we go away... so did some research, and found a wonderful cattery! Sadly were not in your area.. but the cattery we use is clean... quiet..and run by the wonderful ''aunty Rachael''.. so there are good ones out there.. ring round.. go and have a look.. ask family and friends if they know of any good ones... My two hate being left... they love thier home comforts.. but we have peace of mind knowing they are being well cared for and needs attended too ! Good luck.. Mrs C x

We use a cattery for our kitten which was recommended to us by a friend. I would suggest you go and visit and meet the people that run it to see if you're happy with it. The people at our cattery are fantastic and the kitten mostly views it as an adventure and new places to explore!

Hi Jem...this looks lovely. I ran a small cattery for years. Can't recall one cat that didn't settle.....lots of fretting owners though. Make sure you are able to see your cat into the pen. I was happy for the cat to have a blanket or toys from home...some don't.
We had the occasional owner who worried so much beforehand that I would offer a free one night stay so they could see how settled the cat was when they collected it. x

Hi Jemisa, I agree with bushbaby and gness. You must go see the cattery before you decide, just call unexpectedly, if they don't let you look around I wouldn't use them. Make sure they are genuine cat people, sometimes you will see their own cats on the property. You can then get a gut feeling. Don't you have a relative or neighbour who can call in and feed Ella for you otherwise?

Awww! You've all been so kind and indeed helping me to feel more comfortable about it. We are planning to pop into the Cattery tomorrow to have a look around. I have looked at the web site & all looks good. We will be taking Ella to the vet too before hand to check her jabs are up to date.
This will be a new experience for Ella and us too.
I'll let you know how we get on...

I had exactly the same concerns as you Jem. Neither of mine had ever been in other company before and they were both a bag of nerves at the sound of a plastic bag.
When I got back form 10 days of fretting I was greeted by 2 cats who were pleased to see me but not crying for me and the lady at the cattery was enthusing about their personalities and had let one sleep on her lap for a while.
They'll be ok. Enjoy your holiday :)

Makes me laugh when people say 'turn up unexpectedly' - what do you think they do when you are not there nail the cats to the wall or shut them in wooden boxes? Cattery owners do have lives and businesses to run - it is only polite to make an appointment and go when they have finished cleaning/feeding their cats. Having run kennels and catteries for many years we always welcomed people to look round but when we were ready to show them - if they did not like that then they did not have to book. Never had anyone complain and I am sure they would not want to walk round when we were shovelling sh*t or collecting empty food bowls.

I'm not from your area either but one piece of advice that really helped me was to use a cattery that was not in any way linked to a kennels. We have many by us that are both cattery and kennels and, the dogs barking really freak out the cats.

ShaLynn looks lovely and any good cattery would be happy for you to go and look around and see how the other 'residents' are settled before you decide.
