Each time i pay for my online shopping (Tesco or Asda) and i go to the verified by visa screen where i normally have to put the password letters in, the last 2 weeks it skips the password bit and goes straight to the next screen which thanks me for my payment and confirms my order.

I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed that they don't have to put there password in or maybe its a fault with verified by visa.

I think it's a random thing. I change my orders a lot and sometimes I have to do the password thing and sometimes I don't.
I may be wrong, but I think that after a while of using your card from your IP address the system recognises you and doesn't ask for your password any more.

All I know for sure is that I've not been asked for my password for a donkey's age.

It does vary according to the transaction - it's governed by the card issuer and they don't (for security reasons) release details of how they decide to seek verification or not.
Rapport will not run on Apple Mac.
I have had the same experience as SP - have not been asked to present characters from my password for a long time - in fact, not entirely sure i would remember it now if I were asked!

On the other hand, my Mother, a recent convert to online purchasing, is asked it all the time....

Thanks everybody for the replies.

I have been using it for years, so perhaps like you say it recognises my IP address, just thought it a bit strange as its only the last 2 weeks i haven't had to put it in.

thanks again
I noticed that today when I placed a Tesco order. It has always taken me to the Verified screen, but it didn't today.
So glad I read this as this week when I paid by visa it did not take me for verification which it normally does . But must be ok as it is gone from my account.
Yeah. We play the lottery on line and have always had to put a password in (could never remember it so had to change it everytime) but with the last top up it skipped that stage.
bongoboy, I have been shopping online with Tesco for years too and it did the same thing to me this week for the very first time also.

Thanks for all the replies.

It seems this is happening to all of us, like you smowball i have been using Tesco for years and this has only happened the last 2 weeks.
is skipping a security check a good thing?
It's stopped asking me for my password as well, which is good in some ways as I can never remember what it is. But like jno says, is this really a good thing?
Having said that, Visa is pretty hot at spotting potential fraud from unusual buying patterns. They've phoned me up a couple of times when I've bought something unusual
Its all about the balance between ease of use/convenience, and security really, isn't it?

As a rule, particularly for accessing bank accounts and the like, the more security the better, but I must confess I do quite like to be able to 1 click shop when online...

I don't think it skips the check so much as checks your IP address. When I use my cards I still get the "contacting your bank for verification" page but not the actual prompt for my password.
