DBS checks (which have replaced CRB checks) can't be obtained directly by an individual. Your employer must make the application. If you were simply applying for a job, the employer could require you to pay for the check but if you're already in employment any ongoing costs associated with that employment (such as DBS checks or keeping First Aid qualifications up to date) should be met by the employer.

i should have said renewal was for same employer but many thanx for your answer
I agree with Chris - I've never had to pay for a work-related CRB, the employer does it.

i had to pay last year when I first started with them but think it was slightly subsidised
Some agencies require that agency staff pay for the CRB check by reimbursing the agency- either by cheque or as a deduction from payroll. Some employers may do the same but most will bear all the cost.
I believe that if you have to pay yourself you are not allowed to offset the cost against tax- my agency lists the things that can be offset but specifies CRB check costs as something that cannot be offset against tax. You could always check with HMRC though in case my agency is wrong.

thanx for that factor
