I am trying to find a WW1 record for Reuben James Peddar who was born in Cheshunt in 1877. I have a picture of him taken in Malta dressed in a rather grand uniform.
I believe he was a gunner of some sort as he died in 1928 from complications as a result of a gun carriage wheel rolling over his stomach (he had lots of problems apparently).

There is only one WWI medal card for an RJ Peddar I can find on ancestry .... but it says the R is for Richard ........ so can't be yours. There is a photo of him on someone's tree on ancestry (might be your tree, so apologies if it is!!!) the reuben james peddar in that tree died in 1919, not 1928 but was born in cheshunt in 1877, the one that died in 1928 died in edmonton and was born there in 1877.

which is confusing cos the tree has him born in cheshunt herts.

Edmonton was the registration area for Cheshunt, caused me problems when I first started doing OH 's tree!
The photo is on another relative's tree, with whom I am in contact.
The Reuben who died in 1919 was Reuben's father.
The aunt who gave me the info is 90, so was alive in 1928 and remembers his death.

I have just discovered that seriously wounded soldiers were sent to Malta in hospital ships as it was believed that the climate would help them recover more quickly. The injured were mainly from Gallipoli and Salonika, so perhaps I can find out from this which regiment he may have been in.

Just discovered he was in the Boer War, perhaps he had the photo taken on his way out, or he was wounded and the casualties of that war went to Malta too!

there is an R pedder serving on HMS Thesis in 1902 a leading seaman who was awarded the Queens South Africa medal
"The Queen's South Africa Medal (QSA) was awarded to R Pedder and Military Personnel who served in the Boer War in South Africa between 11th October 1899 and 31 May 1902"

that would be a good reason to have a photo taken,

Thanks Dot. I am going back to his daughter-in-law who may remember. Although he was injured, it didn't stop him having 7 children with two women, both at the same time!
I have a picture but not sure how I out it on here, someone may recognise the uniform.
