“I don't know why after all these years she should be acnowleged better than any other MP who has served over the years to be granted such a ceremony! Why aren't other MPs allowed the same? “
It’s simple. I’ve avoided making such controversial remarks when answering questions on Mts T’s death over the past week, but the time has come.
The reason Mrs Thatcher should be afforded slightly more advantageous facilities than “any other MP who has served over the years” is plainly and simply because she did more to drag this country out of the mess that existed in the 1970s than any other politician would have done or indeed did. She did more to improve the lot of the majority of the electorate in this country than any other politician I have known throughout my life. Don’t ask former coal miners (who were badly led by their union leaders). Don’t ask workers in heavily unionised industries who came out on strike at the drop of a hat throughout the 70s. Ask normal working people (like me) who were simply trying to make their way in life without being a burden on the State. People who woke up every morning during the 1970s wondering which vital service would be suffering “industrial action” (and thus cocking up the day for millions of people who were probably earning far less than they were).
Mrs Thatcher sorted this out. She sorted out the EEC (as it then was). She was a firm believer in the Single Market. She liberated the financial markets so that Joe Public could join in and make a few bob from transactions previously the sole preserve of a few “Old School” chums. She removed from the public accounts publicly funded industries which ran at huge losses and which were operated principally for the benefit of their employees. And much, much more which would take too long to explain.
Unless you were there you would not have a clue what it was like. I was there; I knew what it was like. I knew why Mrs T was so popular a Prime Minister. And that’s why she deserves a little bit more attention following her death than any of the pygmy politicians that have infested the House of Commons since her time would warrant.
There! That should elicit another 150 responses !!!
