Thatcher is hated and loved because of her determination and strength (rightly or wrongly, she had both). I think personally the better question to ask is would these qualities be recognised so strongly if she was a bloke? For me, anyone with the character she had would always be loved and hated in equal measures. I think some of the characteristics she had we would associate with more masculine qualities, I suspect (and I'm very willing to be proved wrong), that the person that was similar may have been Queen Elizabeth I... Just some thoughts that have been rattling in my brain recently :c)

AlMurray does a routine in his stand up where is says "of course its all the "name of previous government in power"'s fault, then points out that some of their policies were actually the same as their predecessor and carries on the regression...he says he has to stop at Pitt the Younger because the audience get bored.....
More people supported MT than hated her. She wouldn't have been elected 3 times if that wasn't the case.
I don't feel David Cameron has the same strength of character and impact that she had. She was head and shoulders above everyone else and knew how to put people in their place. Thats why people are so passionate about the way they feel about her. Positively or negatively.

Clem Attlee was disliked a lot, even hated, by a substantial body of the middle class but the difference was that back then there was a real class war, there was a real battle between socialism and established capitalism, with no middle ground. It was the Labour Party that was hated more than its leaders individually (and vice versa). No Labour government now would bear any resemblance to "Old Labour". Tony Blair succeeded because he detached the party from the past, having learnt a lot from Mrs Thatcher .
