I have just noticed for the first time that when entering a new question title any of my previous questions that started with the same letter appear in a drop down. What is the purpose of this?

Prudie - it is as S-D suggests. If you use Chrome or Firefox they update silently in the background, so you might not notice any actual "update" while experiencing new features.
I am on Chrome and it has always done it - each night I type 'n' in question box and it fills in my night song title.
