Nick then went to give the answer, Brassica saying that Brassic referred to being skint.
I have always knows it as Boracic, as in Boracic Lint.
Cockney rhyming slang - boracic lint --> skint. Only most cockneys (and a few other colourful linguists) will just pronounce/say it "brassic" (ie "b'racic").
As cupid says, Brassica is a plant and as far as I know nothing to do with the manufacture of boracic lint.
