Engine Over Revving When Coming To A Halt.

Hi, I have a Ford Focus and over the last couple days when I stop the car, stopping at junctions, crossing etc The revs go up to almost 4000rpm. This not only embarrassing for me but also, I assume, not very good for the car. Any ideas people? I know nothing about cars so I am appealing for your theories TIA

could be your throttle cable is sticking and not releasing properly when you take your foot off the accelerator pedal, get it checked at a garage as it could become a real problem and stick when you are trying to slow down.

Sounds like throttle cable sticking. Just locate it in engine bay, unhook it from operating arm, and add a few drops of light oil to run down between cable and shroud.
Check return spring is OK
Check for kinks in shroud or worn areas where shroud may be touching other areas in bay.

I had this with a Ford Fiesta, and it was caused by a faulty throttle position sensor, otherwise known as a potentiometer.

If you replace it yourself, buy a genuine Ford one. I made the mistake initially of buying a cheap Chinese copy off eBay and it caused other problems.
