wrong Salvador I think Clanad. Salvador is a coastal city in Brazil, lovely old colonial town, vibrant, fascinating. I was mugged there, lost everything, and couldn't face going back... but of course I can't promise that anything so exciting will happen to you. Objectively speaking, it's well worth a visit, just watch where you go. (I misread a map and got into the wrong area.)
Thanks jno... I didn't pick up on that...Your experience is rather like the description in the old Beach Boy's song, Sloop John B.

just spotted this by a travel writer in the Daily Telegraph (over the new year) - much more recent than my visit. No idea if he's right or not; his views may be coloured by his ill health.

Never again: Salvador, Brazil
After reading rave reviews, I was expecting much from this city on Brazil's north-east coast. I found it unfriendly and dirty, with a depressingly large number of slums. A meal of pumpkin in palm oil had me racing for the nearest bathroom, where I remained for the next 24 hours.
