The law these days...
What would be the outcome if someone stole a policeman's helmet these days?
Just reading Jeeves and Wooster again, and Bertie keeps mentioning this sort of stuff. They all seem very calm about getting arrested in those books.

Lorry driver approaches and drives with speed through flooded area.. soaking police officer.. then returns some time later and drives past laughing, number is taken of vehicle and driver traced.. charged with driving without due care and attention.. ie safety of other road users and pedestrians.. with regard to the knocking off a police officers helmet.. depending where you are in the country they wear flat hats now.. you would be charged with common assault and probably some really old antiquated law relating to offences against the monarch.. seeing that the police are working for queen and country..
Ahhh STEALING a Police officers helmet.. You'd be charged with theft obviously and then and depending whether you nicked it when their back was turned ie it wasn't on their head it would be either theft from a person or theft other, then depending on your previous convictions if any.. anything from fine of say 150 and court costs (which start from 464 a day in magistrates court)... it all balances on what your sob story will be.. oops I mean mitigation.
