the AA, RAC or Greenflag???

I need to join a breakdown service as I do long journeys by myself sometimes and being a lone female want to know that there will be somebody to come and get me should i get into trouble on the road.  i also want to know that some one will come out in the morning if the car refuses to start on a winters morning.

can anyone give me advice to which breakdown service provider gives the best value for money, in your opinion??   thanks in advance

Can't comment on AA or RAC I'm afraid - we've always used Green Flag & in our opinion they provide an excellent (if not outstanding) service.  It doesn't cost very much, and both the call centre staff & the mechanics have always been friendly, professional & helpful.  I think the longest we've ever had to wait was just over 40 minutes & that was because we didn't know exactly where we were - they still found us though!  The last time we called them out was when my wife had a puncture when she was on her own - it was peak-traffic time but they still got there in 15 minutes.

I am happy with RAC and my wife had a quick response from them as well.  I suspect there will be as many goods as bads to this one.  A friend was very unhappy with AA because their relay service was very disjointed via depots (this may have changed) wheras RAC took my wife, and her car, home in one go.

Don't know about RAC but was with AA for many years and found them to be excellent.
When I had a caravan the Caravan Club had a deal with Green Flag whereby they would get you and the caravan both to AND from your destination so I joined them.  I can honestly say that they are every bit as good as the AA so shop around for the best deal you can get.  Good luck.

ring up your insurance company. I find the premium they charge for recovery/assistance is far cheaper than the ones you mention. Further if you are involved in an accident, your car will be taken straight to an approved garage.

Have you checked your Insurance?  the reason I ask is that some companies have a built in breakdown cover.  If you dont, then it is only by reputation that you can go on.  I have been with the AA since 1995 and have always been helpful and prompt even when it was not an emergency.  They also helped me out when I was in a strange area shortly after I first started driving and I was scared beyond belief with all these cars whizzing by at high speed.  Choose which is best for you.

I'm with the RAC and think they're brilliant (they've always got to me within 15 minutes). My mum is smitten with the AA. Because the AA and RAC were the same price I chose them based on freebies. The RAC gives you 20% off everything in all MOTO service stations. I commute a lot and there are zillions of MOTOs along the routes I drive so I have probably made my membership fee back!

I've been with both the RAC and AA and found them to be great. My most recent experience: A garage tried to rip me off by charging me �200 for a tyre (being a female on my own) and I called the RAC who were prompt, very courteous and as helpful as they could be. I would also recommend Britannia Rescue who have been excellent with my parents, and I believe charge very reasonably. Hope that helps !

Thanks everyone.  It's been great to listen to personal recommendations and am surprised that the majority are positive, i thought there might be a lot more horror stories to be honest!!

Not so happy with RAC any more, they took an hour to pick up my lone daughter when she had broken down, and now they won't refund her membership - it was paid only a month ago, for a year, and she has a warranty with the new car she has just bought. I will try Greenflag next time. The AA charge to tow back home.
