Christmas Turkeys

At a quiz last week the question was , How many turkeys are eaten at Christmas in the UK. The answer given was 11 million. I think that answer is complete rubbish as that would mean one turkey for every five people. On a site on the internet is said 15 million.which is even worse. Nobody Knows.

My search says 22 million, which is probably more like it. Take the people that will still carry on eating a ready meal or their normal daily food, and then the others who will opt for duck, goose or chicken for example. And then there are vegetarians... but we won't talk about them!

Given the answer will change from year to year I hope there was a wide tolerance on the accepted answer range. There are about 63 million folk so the five turkeys I had Xmas morning would have helped :-)

If you take account of the office party, the car club Christmas get together, etc; it might not be that far wide of the mark, having said that I can count on one hand the number of times I've eaten turkey in the last 35 years.

I've no idea what the answer is, but I've gotta agree that I think that 15 million turkeys is way too much. Assuming approx 60 million population - that's 1 turkey for every 4 people.
What we really need to know is, over what exact time frame these figures represent ... is it just on Xmas day, a week, 2 weeks ... that might make a difference ??

You are forgetting how many are used in catering, from hospitals, schools canteens, military ect then you can go onto pubs hotels ect.

Assuming of course that they were Turkies, if bought from a few well known supermarkets they could have being something else but disguised as a Turkey.

Hard to say because the statistics gathered may be for different questions if different sources were used. Then again someone may have answered yes even if they only had a turkey sandwich.

Questions could be
Did you have turkey at Christmas?
Did your family share a turkey at Christmas?
Did you have a turkey dinner at Christmas?
or even
Have you ever had a turkey at Christmas?

Always confused... you said "then there are vegetarians, but we won't talk about them.." Why not? What's wrong, in your opinion, with being a vegetarian?

A few years back I worked in the kitchens at a large hotel, we had a Christmas party menu from the beginning of December to New year with 100 to 150 people every night . The chefs worked out that by the end of the season we had cooked over 5 tonnes ( YES 5 TONNES) of turkey.

that was probably one of those stupid 'questimates' at how many turkeys were sold. So many people are diversifying and having something different, and taking into consideration those whose don't celebrate Christmas, I would put it more like 7-8 million.

janbee, that was supposed to be lighthearted humour! I was vegetarian throughout my teenage years, but it's a headache trying to find interesting non-meat dishes to cook sometimes when you invite a vegetarian around
