EHIC Card

Everyone now wanting to travel throughout Europe now apparently needs an EHIC card (European Health Insurance) which has replaced the old E111.

Why hasn't there been any press about this? I only found out by a friend.

More CYA on Europes part. I think they are making more red tape so its harder to do anything without taking out private insurance, highering a solicitor or signing away all of your rights.

Give it ten years and we will all be buying breathing insurance, incase someone breathes flu (or even worse, smoke) in our faces.

Hmm. "Why hasn't there been any press about this?". Well I've known about it for at least 2 years (possibly 3). During that time, through reading travel articles, watching travel shows on TV and listening to consumer programmes on Radio 4 I think that I must have heard close to one hundred references to it. (There have also been several questions here on AB which have referred to it).

Much of what has recently come from Brussels (including the European constitution) has been designed to unify systems and simplify procedures. This is just one part of a long overdue drive to bring 'unity' to the 'Union'.

If you took out an old E111 at any time in 2005 then you would have been told and/or seen the notices on the forms.

Which reminds me, I have not received my new card(s) for the family. Anyone know when they are due to be issued?

BigMac, no offence meant, but have you applied for the cards? I applied by phone on a Friday in April and the card arrived the next week.

bigmac, if you applied by ticking the box on the old E111 application form, it should have arrived a couple of months ago.

Apply again if it hasn't - it won't come now..

Yep - got mine within a week of applying for it - about 3 months back, I think.

Yep, I did apply by ticking the old E111 form. They were sent out in November, but never received. They're being reissued.

You can apply online here. Thats what we did and got the cards back in a few days.
