Which form is correct: "in the street" or "on the street"?

Depends on context. For example:

• "The traffic in the street was very heavy."


• "After losing his job, getting divorced, and suffering from alcoholism, he found himself on the street."

very hard to say. The song 'On the Street Where You Live' should really be 'In the Street...', I think, but nobody's complained. As BigMac says, it depends on what sounds best for the whole sentence.

In the US, at least, "on the street" is more appropriate, whether it be "on the street where you live" or "he was left out on the street." In casual conversation, one would say "I live on Main Street" rather than "in Main Street."
