I am planning a trip to NZ in July/August. Initially I will stay with my daughter in Auckland (she has been there since December) but then I would like to spend about 3 weeks travelling alone around the country. I have looked at the Kiwiexperience, Magicbus and NZ Railways websites but I would welcome any tips/experiences that you might have.

Just to warn you, I don't know what age you are, but the Kiwi bus is called the shagging bus. I had heard the Magic more sutable for younger persons (17-18 or so), although my friend went on that and it sounded as bad as the Kiwi - saying that it depends on the group of people you go with. I went with Stray, who are fairly new, but were great. If you go to tourist advice, and are older, they will probably steer you to this company - really nice.

Hope you have a great time, don't forget the Bay of Islands at the top - gorgeous, definitely worth taking a few days up there. If you are on a budget and want to do some parachuting - go to Taupo - the cheapest in all NZ. Have a great time - I'm so jealous!!!

Anyway, I don't leave until July so I have got plenty of time to work out what to do when I get there.

For a lone traveler, an organised coach tour would be good thoiugh expensive. Newmans Tours do these in NZ and may be worth a look. Equally, the lowest cost in not necessarily the best or even satisfactory if you want to travel in comfort and safety. Forget railways - not worth even a thought.

One alternative is InterCity coaches which travel as the name suggests. They have a number of 'Passes' which can be used and may even include motel accommodation if needed. Check on the www under Newmans NZ. They may even be helpful in crossing CFook Staright by ferry as you be mad not to visit the South Island.

Motels, B&Bs and Hotels will be chuffed to see you in July/Aug when Kiwis are huddled over their heaters. You will not have a problem bookin g anywhere or even arriving the door. Check the www for AA NZ or Jasons NZ for all accommodation except large hotels.
