If your tariff has more than 600 free minutes, you can get substantial reductions on international call charges by registering (free) with O2's International Traveller Service. It will reduce the cost of calls to the UK from 85p per minute to 60p per minute. The cost of receiving incoming calls will fall from £1.11 per minute to 43p per minute:

I spend a lot of time in NZ. For use in NZ, why not buy a cheap 2nd hand mobile when you get there? One that takes a simcard. Get a $5 simcard from 2degrees and top up with $20. They do 44cents per minutes and 9 cents per text. Even international calls may be cheaper than a mobile on contract, you just have to compare.
