where has all the cheap food gone
7 Answers
Not that long ago you were able to buy cheap food( good quality pies, puddings, pasta dishes etc ) from the market which was ex'supermarket'-the best kind of course. Now those stalls seem to have disappeared- I have friends who live in various places in the uk and its the same everywhere. Now- is the out of date/damaged/overstocked food all going into the waste bin ---or somewhere else?Do you have a cheap food stall on your market still?

It is normal practice to destroy food/goods before putting them in the skip . Alternatively there has been a clamp-down on the selling of food unfit for human comsumption e.g. out of date or damaged tins. It is illegal to food is this condition.
my local supermarkets sell their own near to sell by date stuff, also I believe that ther is now a charity that takes the near to sell by produce of some shops and distributes it to shelters for homeless people, also also, I read somewhere that shops are getting better at predicting demand, so there actually is less waste
Thanks to all who answered . I didnt think about the charity element -although I do know for a fact that some very big supermarkets will not allow their out of date foods to go to the local homeless shelter. But I am pleased that there isnt the amount of waste I first thought going on. And ANSWERBOK- thanks for your input -I love a bargain.
I used to be a manager in one of the Large supermarket chains. The reason they dont give away food to homeless shelters apart from the fact its gone out of date is that it might encourage people to order more than needed etc so this stops any of that, also the advent of Sunday opening has meant that less products are able to go out of date over the weekend.
