Im having to send an item back to an ebay seller (they have sent the wrong item) and they tell me they will refund me but what about the cost to post it back to them? (its a big box)

The seller, who also had a Gamecube console for sale in a separate listing, inadvertently sent me the console instead of the game. I pictured some poor so-and-so waiting with bated breath to receive the console and instead receiving the game! I contacted the seller and told him of his mistake. I offered to return the console but made it clear he would first have to credit my PayPal account with the money to cover return postage. In his reply he told me he had absolutely no problem with this. Then I realised this would mean him having to fork out the postage on this particular item a total of three times (on getting the item back he would then have to re-send it to the rightful buyer). So, by way of a solution, I offered to send it direct to the buyer on his behalf. I would of course obtain a Certificate of Posting. He agreed with this and I'm happy to say we all got the correct items in the end.
So, in answer to your question:- As it was the seller's mistake and not yours, then you should definitely not have to pay to return the item back to them. Any decent seller would understand and accept this. I would suggest you contact the seller before returning the item to them and see what they have to say.

If its their fault, they should pay, and if they refuse, leave bad feedback. that will ensure they don't get 50% discount on any goods sold for at least a month. so anything they sell will cost them 10% of the final value. and any future buyers will be wary. If you ordered it incorrectly, then you still have the seven day mail order clause, by law, they must pay return postage, even if its your change of mind, just saying you don't like it. If you buy it from a shop and don't like it, tough, you have no right of return, but mail order, you have seven days and they must pay the return postage, no matter what the reason.thats the law.
If the seller has sent the wrong item that then it is down to them to pay for return postage. But ebay policy is not to refund until you have the item back. So you need to contact the seller and ask to return it, once they agree then you need to send it back by a recorded delivery service so that there is proof that they have got it back. They should then refund you the purchase price and the return postage. If they don't then complain to ebay .
Sounds tough but that's how it works. If you do not return it by a recorded service they can just say they have not got it back and refuse to do anything.
Have you recorded this with ebay as 'not as described' yet ? if not do it now ! This ensures that ebay are aware of the problem and will help to resolve it.
It is 100% the sellers responsibility to ensure that the correct item has been sent , as they will find out, it can get expensive if you make a mistake. I once sent an item to the wrong person but as it was not sent via recorded delivery there was no record of it. They said they had not received it so even though I was certain I had sent it to them I could not prove it , I had to refund the original buyer as well as loosing a valuable item.
Have you thought of using CollectPlus to return the box ? they are much cheaper than the Post Office and as it is a recorded service it can prove that it has been delivered, ebay now recommend CollectPlus I use them all the time. £5.99 for a parcel up to 7Kg.
