I've got a packet of wild smoked salmon in the fridge that I forgot to eat at Xmas. The eat-by date was 26 Dec, but the packet hasn't been opened and it hasn't gone green or anything. Do you think it's safe to eat? Is there any way of telling, apart from getting my girlfriend to eat a bit and seeing if she's sick?

Ive got no problem with eating food thats a bit out of date, however, this is "fresh" fish and I think a whole month out of date might be pushing it a bit. Is it really worth a bout of food poisoning?
I agree with hobby, usually I#ll eat things that are past their use by date but I wouldn't do it with fish, especially if it is a month out!

Is it in the fridge or the freezer?

If the former, try it. Smoking is a way to preserve and if it's a vacuum sealed pack it should be fine. But as my grandmother taught me, when in doubt, throw it out.

However, if it's in the freezer there should be no problem. I have wild smoked salmon that I got at Christmas (and froze straight away) that I'll be very happy to eat at Easter or later... if we can leave it alone that long, it's delicious....

what happens with smoked fish that is not eaten soon enough and not frozen is that the oil in it goes rancid. It won't look any different and the packet won't "blow" but it is likely to smell and taste "off"

I agree with ineedahobby on this. more than a month is definitely pushing your luck!!

step away from the salmon!
