Emersons Works

Not sure where to post this but does anyone know how i can find out how much a book is worth. I have Emersons works on Essays dated i think from 1882, it seems to have a signature inside front cover

Binding - Douglas Cockerell. The Essays of Emerson, 2 vols., Arthur L. Humphreys, 1899, titles printed in red and black, a.e.g., full smooth brown morocco, gilt lettered spines with five raised bands and blind-stamped floral motifs, both monogrammed "D.C. 1900" on turn-in, sl. rubbed, 4to Presentation inscription on half-title to first volume from Frances Evelyn Warwick (1861-1938), Countess of Warwick and close friend of Edward VII. In the 1890s she carried on a long affair with the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII), which was broken off as she began to show an increasing interest in Socialism. (2)

The price realised for the item described by halfadaily was due to the inscription by the Countess of Warwick, more than to the book itself. Who wrote your inscription ? -it could be important. Having said that, most books are devalued by inscriptions unless they are by someone of historical interest. Try looking in various antiquarian book sites for a description that matches your book.

Incidentally, 'aeg' means 'all edges guilt'. All three edges of the book are gold.

You could try contacting specialist book auctioneer who may give you a guide price if you wish to sell. Or you could take the book to a book dealer, although you'll only get about 50% of the market value. Condition is very important to a collector unless it is a great rarity. Good luck
