A single tuner means you can only record the Freeview channel you are currently watching.

A twin tuner enables you to watch one Freeview channel whilst recording another Freeview channel, or even to watch a Freeview channel in one room and other Freeview channels in a separate room.
In actual fact, some twin tuner models such as the Topfield which has a 160GB HDD will record 2 different programmes simultaneously and, depending upon the multiplex, even let watch a pre-recorded programme at the same time or time-lapse one of the programmes you are recording.
