Hi we are visiting Liverpool for a testimonial match; usually we stay with a friend who is away. Any tips on cheap and cheerful, nice enough places to stay near Anfield please

Depends on how you're travelling and how cheap is cheap. Premier Inn have got a room at St Helens on the A580 (East Lancs Road, so dead easy to get to Anfield) for £40. Obviously if you're using public transport then that's no good to you.
