Im looking into the possibility of selling home made goats yoghurt, goats cheese and goats milk from a farmers market. I have been on to the DEFRA site but cant find anything that may restrict me. Maybe I would need to have my goats accredited, not sure.

Any help please.

Good luck Ratter. There must be some restrictions in place considering the WI can't even sell home made jam and cakes nowadays...................
I think the problem is that if you want to sell unpasturised milk products you have to be certified up to the eyeballs.

I take it that's what you're talking about - check for rules on unpasturised milk products

Oops just seen that's for Iowa!
This website claims selling yoghurt from raw milk is illegal from shops in the UK

but it's not clear whether it applies to Farmers markets

Just bought a small pork pie from a farmers market £2.70 ! the size that are 60-80p in a supermarket. It was not that good either.

Ok, thanks guys, lots of stuff to read through, it looks like I would be able to sell the products but would need the herd accredited.

Im not sure if I even want to go down that route yet but it does appeal to me, the thought of milking how ever many goats twice a day needs a bit more thought. We will have a goat or two for our own cheese and yoghurt and the animal therapy but it may stop there.

Again, thanks for your time.

Eddie, I know some of the prices I see at farmers markets appear shocking but I am now realising just how much it costs to keep these animals, so difficult to compete with the huge retailers.
How about contacting a small enterprise who have been through the processes already and asking if they'd mentor you Ratter? Someone who's far enough away not to be competition but who might enjoy the idea of supporting another kindred spirit.

Here's one in Norfolk for example...

Maydup, I will make further inquiries if I feel we will be going down that road, Im just checking out the legalities first to see if it is our cup of tea and if we will have time to even do all that work, quite time consuming I think.

Thanks for your reply.
Best of luck in this endevour, Ratter. How soon can I place my order?
