New Boiler.

We have had an Ideal Classic boiler for 15 years and its beginning to show its age. I have someone coming next week to give me a quote for a new one.(not a combi boiler) Can anyone suggest some good ones so that when the chap comes I have an idea what he's talking about.Thanks for any advice.

I'm not an expert on boilers, but I can tell you what we have.
Ours is a Bosch RD 532 condensing boiler that gives c/heating and hot water in our 3-bed bungalow. It was installed in 2005, and is regularly serviced by British Gas. I was told by a gas engineer that every replacement boiler in England has to be a condensing boiler. It has worked very well, and only had one fault some years ago, when a water release valve had to be replaced, but it wasn't a big problem. The condensate drain pipe originally went through the kitchen wall and drained outside, but the recent bad winters made it freeze up, so we had it rerouted inside the house, so that it now drains into the trap under the kitchen sink. That might be a point for you to consider. Best of luck.

Vaillant are excellent,but may be a bit pricey. As always you tend to get what you pay for,and boilers are no exception to this.

It also is a Worcester (non-combi). A brand which came highly recommended. My old boiler was there when I moved in (25 yrs in August) and has just about given up. The timer doesn't work so it either has to stay on or off. Hence my gas bill was over £500 this last quarter. Yikes. Anyway...

He is fitting a Worcester Greenstar 30CDI System Boiler, new pump/programmer, new flue, new pipes emanating from the boiler, sorting our my emersion heater wiring,power flushing the system and some other stuff to do with pipes etc. Oh - plus service my mum's boiler. It is going to take 2.5 days and it is costing me £2400. Does that help at all?

God no - not British Gas!! Their prices start at £3k!!! A local guy. Its someone my builder/repair guy recommended (who in turn was recommended by the cleaner at work :-) ) My whole network of boiler men, plumbers, electricians etc are on recommendations. He's corgi registered and all that. My builder could do the job but would have had to get Adam in to certify it anyway, so was happy to 'pass' the job over. Where are you? I'm in Essex. I am extremely fortunate in my 'guys' - I live on my own so if they find something else that needs doing (dripping tap etc) they tend to fix it as they go along. Bless 'em. And no - they are not all Czech/polish. The builder (handsome Giorgio) is Italian, Standa (electrician) is Czech and Adam is English. Superb guys.

Worcester boilers are a great boiler. Avoid Vokera and Sabre 24 like the plague. I have a Vokera/Sabre 24 boiler and even though its served its time, it has been a pain i.e. leaking water, overheating, pressure valve neding to be replaced etc.....
