If when taking a free drop the ball strikes your golf club ( used to measure the required distance) do you incur a penalty or have a free redrop?

20-2. Dropping and Re-Dropping
• a. By Whom and How
A ball to be dropped under the Rules must be dropped by the player himself. He must stand erect, hold the ball at shoulder height and arm’slength and drop it. If a ball is dropped by any other person or in any other manner and the error is not corrected as provided in Rule 20-6, the player incurs a penalty of one stroke.

If the ball, when dropped, touches any person or the equipment of any player before or after it strikes a part of the course and before it comes to rest, the ball must be re-dropped, without penalty. There is no limit to the number of times a ball must be re-dropped in these circumstances.

Many, many thanks ChillDoubt. Just couldn't find answer in my rule book. As I suspected my partner was wrongly given a penalty!

No problem, had to look it up though!
Whenever I've done it myself I usually place a tee peg at the point where the club length would be, then put the club in the bag. Never seen anybody take a drop with the club still in place!
