My daughters hotpoint washer drier which is three years old bangs loudly in use. I have to repair it for her and someone said it needs new brushes. Is this likely?

If the machine needed new brushes the motor would work only half-heartedly or not at all. If it's banging, that's something else causing that.

See this for further info, and links to washing machine repair tips in general (and if you 'Google' for Hotpoint+repairs I'm sure you'll find more).

There was a very lengthy answer to a similar question a while ago. Try typing 'noisy washing machine' in the search on AB to find it.
The brushes are in the motor and wouldn't have anything to do with banging unless it was like a popping sound. It might just be overloaded or unbalanced or have weak or broken springs or damper causing it to touch the sides.
