Correcting Mistakes

Does anyone know of a white crayon or white pencil which can be used to cancel a mistake in a crossword which is to be sent in for a prize ?
Normal white pencils from drawing sets don't work - I've tried; and Tippex looks messy.
(Yes, I know I could do it in pencil first, but I never seem to have a sharpened one to hand )

Does the filled grid have to be cut out from the paper (or magazine etc.) or, if it was printed on ordinary paper, could that be sent in?

I don't send any crosswords in to any publications but I do scan crosswords from the newspapers that I buy and print them (usually after a minor edit such as cropping the image) on ordinary paper. When I've completed the crossword I then scan that filled grid back in and edit the image to overwrite any mistakenly entered letters with the correct letters; that newly corrected version could be printed out. Alternatively I could just print the original grid again and write in the correct answers. Either way, I'd have a correct solution to that crossword on paper.

i have won a newspaper crossword and there was plenty of mistakes there,rubbing out etc.but some people have mentioned on here that they have also sent in 'crossword mistakes' and they still won

this is fiddly but looks better, you need a glue stick [ Tesco is the cheapest] cut out a strip of newspaper from the same page as the crossword mistake then the paper matches, then cut it down to the size of the offending square[ or two] glue the back and paste it, then place over the square and press down , then cut off the surplus, leave a few mins then put in the correct spelling, as I say its fiddly but when finished looks neat, practice makes perfect and I have won once with these corrections.
Alternative W.H.Smith sells a pack of three ball pens with eraser that you can erase for 24 hours after writing.

Thanks for the ideas, except I still think Tipex looks messy. I'd go for the WHSmiths pen but I haven't got a half hour to spare to stand in one of their queues.

I just photocopy the grid on my printer and fill that in till I get it right, then copy it on to the original.
