Why is it that when a child or teenager goes missing and is found dead, everyone always says they were very popular, never did anything wrong and everyone liked/loved him/her, they never say 'well actually he was a right little s**t. Does this mean nothing like this ever happens to the 'bad' kids or does everyone view them through rose tinted glasses after a tragic event?

It's hardly surprising, and not just with children, it's not the right time to say anything negative is it.
Because the majority of people are decent and thoughtful and hurting loved ones by saying nasty things is of no help or consolation.
Most kids have a group of friends they were popular amongst.

Most kids have parents and extended family that loved them and wouldn't view them as little s**ts.

There is 'good' in everyone, admittedly you have to dig deep sometimes to find it though.

I think phrases like 'he was a character/she was a little imp' are euphemisms used to acknowledge that they demonstrated challenging behaviours. To be as blunt as you have suggested would be disrespectful to the deceased and those who knew another side to them.

dave...LOL...always the case ..........and when the parents of an alleged murderer or rapist come on TV, their son is always "lovable, gentle and clearly innocent e.g the parents of the Boston Bombers"

It's par for the course dave....
We're talking about child victims here, Sqad. Do you expect the parents or friends to say anything negative on live TV?

I can honestly say that I haven't seen many parents sticking up for their children when they have be accused of heinous crimes.
ummmm

Yes I know......and no I don't expect them to say negative things.....where did i say that I did?

Right.
I dunno, we all had a good laugh when Tony Martin shot that scrotey little burglar a few years ago.
a pal of the young alba's was killed nearly 3 years ago. I liked him. He was a typical 16 year old boy, cheeky, impish, likeable.
He was popular and liked very much.

Still missed.
Snafu....LOL....Don't you mean that lovable adorable and popular "scrotey little burglar?"
He was a criminal.
In general we don't speak ill of the dead. One of the most demanding jobs of a Commanding Officer is to write to next of kin saying "what a popular member of the unit your son/husband was" when some poor lad gets killed in action. Never mind that the guy might have spent time in cells for theft or drunken fighting and was considered a complete a-hole..
But there is a side to our offspring we don't see.
Cregan the self confessed cop killer (he pleaded guilty to their murder earlier on this month) didnt kill any kidz as far as we know

however the Short father and son were well known to be and unpleasant pair. [They still loved their mum, as we know from oral testimony)
The absolute scrotes are always described as 'Lovable rogues'
