Everybody accepts that men who rape are guilty of a dreadful crime and should have the full force of the law brought to bear on them. But when are women going to accept that they sometimes put themselves in danger ? It won't alter the guilt of the raper. Women should look after themselves better. In my town centre late at night, there are women who go out practically naked.
That's as may be, but it still doesn't give any man the 'right' to press any unwanted advances, mikey.
Do you habitually steal from shops?...What with all of those tempting goods on offer and just begging to be removed from the shelves.........
I don't, for one minute, believe that you do and should think your own moral compass tells you that it is wrong to do so.
It should be that same moral compass telling other men that whilst whatever they see may be tempting, they have no right to act on their impulses.

I think mikey's right. It's like defensive driving - being able to say "The other driver was completely in the wrong" isn't much help when you're dead. Likewise, a rape victim will be right to say it was all the man's fault; but that won't put her life back together. Best, in her own interests, to take care. That's just pragmatic advice, not moral advice.
Interesting interview with Ann Widdecombe in today's Guardian, which I cannot find on their website, but :::
" if you drive through any city centre on a Friday or Saturday night, you will be treated to the sight of young women, wearing virtually nothing, drunk as owls, falling off pavements and thinking that this is a normal way to spend a happy evening, with all the moral danger that entails"
Nobody on AB and certainly not me, is saying that the perpetrators of the crime of rape are not too blame. It is ludicrous to suggest otherwise. But Widdecombe is right...some women should act more sensibly, and certainly more defensively.

@Mikey. I disagree. That relegates men to an extension of their penis alone, incapable of controlling the blind lust that arises at the site of exposed flesh. Such a view is actually offensively demeaning to men.We are not creatures totally at the whim of our urges, and as thinking rational human beings, with a learnt moral code it should be expected that we would be better than that.
Drunkenness, exposed flesh, whatever. There is never any excuse or justification for rape. Ever.
I would agree that all people should exercise a little more restraint when indulging in consumption of alcohol, however - not because of the relaxation on inhibitions necessarily, but more because you have less awareness of your surroundings, or of situations of physical danger that you might find yourself in.

saw a really good film a long time ago (can't remember the name of the film but i think it starred a young jodie foster!) it centered around a court case that questioned a young girls behaviour/dress that led to her being raped.
i think it goes without saying that NOTHING excuses rape/sexual harrasment if these people cant control themselves then they should be removed from society!
