Clematis Plant

I have a clematis plant which is doing vvery well and shooting up, unfortunately it is like Jack's beanstalk growing vertically. Does any know how I can stop it going up and to spread out? Do I need to train it across a trellis or something?

Yes train it actoss a trellis is a good idea. But be very careful with the tips of the stems as they are extremely fragile and break off easily.

If you nip the extreme top of it out, it will sprout from lower down and make a thicker plant.
